Dailey & Vincent Article

DAILEY & VINCENT

By Bill Conger

BMP: You were both successful in great bands before Dailey and Vincent. You didn’t have a crystal ball to show you how things would turn out. Was it difficult to take that leap of faith?

DARRIN VINCENT: I was kind of scared, having three kids and being secure in Ricky’s (Skaggs) band, but I really had faith in Jamie Dailey and myself and the sound that we had as a duo. I thought we would be okay. The only thing I worried about was just the finances, having three children depending on me. You’ve got to step out in faith at some point and take off and let the Lord lead you where it’s going to go. Once we took that leap of faith and I had my wife’s backing, that was the main thing. She was kind of scared, but once she said, ‘I believe in you and Jamie. You’ve got my 100 percent support.’ It was like 100 percent all the way after that.

JAMIE DAILEY: I wasn’t too nervous because I was at the point that I was ready to go. I had prayed about it. We thought about it. We planned and planned and planned. I thought even if it doesn’t work, I’m ready to try it just to see what it’s like. If it hadn’t worked, I probably would have gone back to college and gone into politics.

BMP: Would you have run for office?

JAMIE: It would have been a long road, but I would like to have probably become an ambassador to a country for the president. I know ambassadors, a lot of them, and have traveled with them and have done some foreign relations work with the state department of America and Young Leaders of America, so I was pretty familiar with that whole arena.

BMP: I’m sure the bluegrass world is glad that you’re still with us.

JAMIE: I hope they are. (both laugh)

BMP: How have you seen your life change for you the last couple of years because of all the success?

DARRIN: Gotten busier, way busier. We come home a lot of times absolutely exhausted, and then we go straight into meetings with our manager and then our business manager, our bookkeeper, our publicist has interviews set up and sometimes we’re meeting with our attorney over lunch. We try to pay very close attention to details of our business. When you do that, it demands a lot of your time. It can be pretty tiring.

BMP: Why do you think Dailey and Vincent has worked so well and been accepted so strongly by the public and the industry?

JAMIE: The good Lord above is what I think it is. I think the Lord puts people where He wants them at the time that He wants them, and I think He puts things in place that He wants to happen. i also think when it’s time for you to be done, that’ll happen too.

DARRIN: We all have free will. He can put us together, but if we don’t go for it and take an effort to make it work, try to go that way, you’ve got that option too. I believe it’s heaven sent and I’m thankful He did. There’s a few times that I had met Jamie before we had even really started talking that he said I just snubbed him. I don’t remember those times.

JAMIE: He surely did. (Darrin laughs) I tried to talk to the snob, and he wouldn’t speak to me.
